Here is a good place to start.

Make sure to use our Research Databases when you're in need of a magazine or newspaper article. We have access to thousands of articles, ranging from those printed last week to twenty years ago. Remember, newspaper and magazine articles, though accessed online, are still considered print sources.

A few tips for searching:

  • Omit "the," "and," "a," "an," "or" and any other articles. They tend to cause more trouble they're worth.
  • When searching for a proper name use quotes: e.g. "John Adams"
  • When searching for a phrase, enclose it in quotes to improve accuracy.
  • Keep search terms to a minimum: use only key words that you know will give you what you're looking for. Anything else shouldn't be typed in.
  • Start broad, and then narrow down if you need to, not the other way around. A common mistake it to put in too many terms, get a few results, and then assume there is nothing on your topic. E.g. Search for "horse abuse rodeos" rather than "horses hurt with whips at rodeos by cowboys."
  • Don't use the plural form in search terms. E.g. "house" instead of "houses." If you do, you'll be excluding the word "house" from all your search results...because the computer is looking for the "s." Same thing goes for words ending in -ing and -ly.
  • Use the minus sign (-) or NOT if you need to exclude a term. For example, "bass NOT fish" is more likely to give you results about bass, the instrument (or guitar) rather than the fish.
